Self Made is the debut documentary feature from Turner Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing, who placed an advert asking the public: “Would you like to be in a film? You can play yourself or a fictional character. Call Gillian.” Of the hundreds of people who replied, seven appear in Self Made, undertaking a Method acting workshop to delve into their own memories, fears and fantasies.

Wearing makes the provocation that in a world where CCTV, reality television and ‘fictonalised’ documentary make us all into performers, reality and fiction are interchangeable commodities. Are we all playing a role, consciously or unconsciously?

Self Made premiered at Abandon Normal Devices in Manchester in September 2010 and in the US at MoMA Director’s Fortnight and SXSW in 2011. The film was released theatrically in the UK by Cornerhouse Artist Film in September 2011. See the Self Made website for screening history.

Self Made is a Fly Film and Third Films Production for UKFC, Northern Film & Media, Arts Council England, Channel 4 Britdoc Foundation and Abandon Normal Devices.

Self Made is available to view on-line from the BFIBFI Player
